As a specialist bank that supports British businesses, we are focused on helping SMEs in our markets to continue to do what they do best - drive economic growth - and we believe that this role will become increasingly important in the years ahead.

Hampshire Trust Bank commissioned the Centre for Economic and Business Research (Cebr) to conduct this research so we could identify the growth trends of UK SMEs and how we can better support the businesses across the sectors in which we operate.

We have released the findings in three parts.

Part one provided an insight into the contributions SMEs in the top 10 UK cities are making to the economy and the sectors that are driving growth.

Part two focused on identifying lending gaps and provides an insight into current business confidence surrounding the issue of accessing finance.

Finally, part three (below) takes a more in-depth look into the sizes and types of businesses that are driving growth.

Our report demonstrates the critical importance of SMEs as the engine room of the economy. Their sizeable contribution to the fortunes of the UK economy - growing to 27% of total business contribution by 2020 - cannot be ignored.
